Chapter 1

“A perpetual holiday is a good working definition of Hell.”

                                                                                          - George Bernard Shaw

Bridger Flynn had been the media darling during his years with the Portland Police Bureau. The press loved his color in this forward-thinking town; an odd combination of deep mocha skin and Irish red hair. They loved Abigail Dalton’s color, too, but for a different reason. Hailing from the Oregon State Police and tending to be a Sandra Bullock look-alike, Abby’s color came more in the form of unfiltered language and unsanctioned comments. So the Bureau brass were holding their breath at this morning’s press conference.

In a quick briefing, the captain handling the case they were working on suggested they rely heavily on “we can’t disclose that information” and “we’re looking into that” types of comments. Abby had ideas of her own about what she’d like to say, but the others frowned on her richly graphic preferences and suggested that she stick with the standard protocol. In fact, everyone realized that, if Bridger had better command of his hearing, he would have been the spokesperson of choice to answer questions for the media, but there was no assurance he would not give away his disability. And wouldn’t the press have a heyday with that? A deaf detective partnered up with a blind one? Best to keep that under wraps for as long as possible. Hopefully, forever. They had their fingers crossed that none of the eager Jimmy Olsens out there had done a thorough probe of Abby’s past, nor of Bridger’s. The reason for her retirement from the State Police supposedly remained sealed and secret. Supposedly. Everyone knew, though, that leaks happened all too often, especially when there was an ex in one’s past. Or an enemy of any sort in one’s present. For cops, there were usually plenty of both, Bridger and Abby being no exceptions.
